Bernice McNamara Memorial Scholarship

The Bernice McNamara Memorial Scholarship Award was established to support the financial needs of young adults who have lost a parent to cancer and are seeking higher education. A loving mother of seven children and a registered nurse, Bernice spent a lifetime helping others. Bernice was a graduate of the Boston College School of Nursing and for many years worked for various doctors, health clinics and volunteered at school systems in Central Massachusetts. In the later years of her nursing career, she worked tirelessly for the Visiting Nurse Association caring for the elderly, the terminally ill and persons with disabilities even after being diagnosed with cancer. She was well-known in the community for her compassionate, caring personality and warm smile. In addition to her nursing career, she lovingly raised seven children making sure all were able to attend college. Unfortunately, Bernice lost her two-year battle to ovarian cancer in 1997. She is remembered fondly by her children, her sisters, and many other family and friends. It is in her compassionate spirit that her family has established this fund to provide assistance to an applicant whose family has been touched by cancer. Applicants must have been between the ages of 15 and 39 during their own diagnosis/treatment or during the diagnosis/treatment of their parent or sibling. For more information or to apply, please visit the scholarship provider's website.
